Back Relief Secrets

Do you have back pain?  If you do have back pain, then you are in the majority — most people will experience some kind of back pain at some time in their life.  We are talking about 80 to 90 percent of people, depending on the statistics you check. Believe it or not, there are back pain relief secrets available.

They are "secrets," because most doctors and  some chiropracters don’t  know about them, because they were never taught about them.  There are a group of practitioners that have found the truth to back pain relief.

These people are holistic practitioners, they use natural healing therapies and techniques. They look into the whole being, the whole person to find what is the cause of back pain and how to treat it, they don’t just look at one part of the body. They look at the chemistry of the whole system/body and the structural aspects of the body are taken into account, too. And, they look at the mental and emotional condition of the person.

On the chemical level, back pain can be caused by diet. The modern condition of processed foods can ne a cause. Other l issues can be from an accident or injury which can cause damage to the tissue in the area. Even the connective tissue can become reactive and cause problems in the skeletal system. There are so many possible chemical causes of back pain, it would be impossible, to list them all here.

Structurally, the same accident, or just sleeping crooked, can knock spinal joints out of alignment.  Even sitting with your legs crossed all of the time can cause back pain, by causing your spine to become unbalanced.  There is one chiropractic school of thought that believes that illness is caused by the spine being out of alignment. It might not always be true, but sometimes there is some truth to this idea. Chiropractic or Naprapathic Adjustments are all that is needed for structural issues.

One of the biggest back pain relief secrets is that emotions are a major cause of physical problems. You won’t find doctors telling you this. Emotions can get stuck in the body as emotional blocks that can affect the way energy moves around in the body and the nerves. This can cause muscles to tighten which can pull joints out of alignment. They can also block energy flow so that healing isn’t really possible. In fact, emotions are one of the major causes of  physical ailments and other illnesses.  Somtimes body work is useful.

There are now many options to find natural practioners and there are many, many techniques. One of the newer ones around is Matrix Energetics.  It can be used for many kinds of things and even for transformtion.  Another easy one is Quantum Touch, this can be very useful for back pain.

These are just a few of the many back pain relief secrets that you can learn about.   Try a few of these ideas and see what is right for you and what will work the best for you.

5 Tips for Upper Back Headaches

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Upper back pain headaches are one of the most common types of headaches. The pain can be debilitating and even affect your concentration, enthusiasm and moods. Just ask those nearest to you what you become like when you have an upper back pain headache.

Upper back pain headaches are due to 5 main factors. Understand these and you also understand how you can eliminate your headaches quickly.

Tip 1 -One of the common causes of headaches in general is dehydration. Whether you suffer from upper back pain headaches or headaches in general, water is essential. You do not need to drown yourself in water, but 3-4 glasses of water a day can eliminate your headaches quickly. The book, Your Body’s Many Cries for Water explains the process of dehydration and how to correct the damage dehydration does on all of the body’s systems.  Dr. Batmanghelidj believes that he has found chronic dehydration to be the cause of many conditions including migraine headaches. He also tells us how much water we need to drink a day to stay healthy.

Tip 2 – Stress is a common cause of upper back pain headaches. Why? Stress, as the saying goes, ‘rides on your shoulders’. Stress affects the muscles in your upper back and neck areas. It is these muscles that refer to the head creating upper back pain headaches. You may think that eliminating stress may be impossible. In reality it isn’t, it is the simple and easy things you do to eliminate stress that matters.

Tip 3 – Stretch your upper back and neck. As it is the muscles around the upper back and neck that refer to the head, stretching them is a wise decision. If the muscles in this area remain relaxed, upper back pain headaches will not occur. As with any area of the spine, the entire spine should be assessed and corrected accordingly.

Tip 4 – Posture affects your upper back. Prolonged sitting is the most common culprit. If you sit for extended periods of time, the upper back joints and muscles tighten, this leads to the upper back pain headaches. Changing your posture regularly is the best solution to postural stresses. Look at your chair position and height; alter your work space to ease any tensions that are created. Exercise and improving your posture will also help to remove and prevent your upper back pain headaches.

Tip 5 – This leads on from secret 4, you need to rest more. Rest means physically lying down more often. This is the only way to truly rest your spine and muscles. Live by a simple motto of ‘if you don’t have to sit or stand – don’t’. This way you will lie down more often and stop the effects of gravity, poor posture, it allows you to de-stress and take tension off the muscles that create your upper back pain headaches.

These 5 simple tips that you can follow will help remove, and prevent your upper back pain headaches. Back pain affects over 80-% of adults at some stage. There are numerous ways you can help your self and stop back pain and upper back pan headaches. All you need to do now is apply these and learn many simple ways to be back pain free.

Here is a video of a simple way to release a headache.

Laugh For Pain Relief

Laugh For Pain Relief

Building a positive focus in your life which includes a regular dose of laughter can really play a key role in supporting the body’s natural ability to cure illnesses through its own healing system.

A man rushed into a veterinarian’s office carrying his limp, lifeless dog. The vet examined the animal and told the man the dog was dead. The man asked if there was any way the doctor could revive the dog. The doctor left the room and returned with a cat, who sniffed the dog from head to tail then looked up at the vet and meowed.
"Sorry," said the doctor. "There’s nothing I can do."
"Thanks for trying," said the man with a sigh. "How much do I owe you?"
"Three hundred and fifty dollars," replied the doctor.
"Three hundred and fifty dollars! Just to tell me my dog is dead?"
"Well," said the doctor, "it was $50 for the office visit. The other $300 is for the CAT scan."

Whether the above joke made you laugh or groan, it lightened your mood. And if you had been in pain, many scientists agree, it would have eased the hurt, at least, temporarily.

A fresh take on an old idea

The notion that laughter is good for the body has been around for thousands of yearscertainly as far back as the Old Testament. Proverbs 17:22 says, "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." Seventeenth century English physician Dr. Thomas Sydenham remarked, "The arrival of a good clown exercises more beneficial influence upon the health of a town than of twenty asses laden with drugs." Or as Groucho Marx put it, "A clown is like aspirin, only he works twice as fast."

The value of laughter in helping to relieve pain began to attract significant attention in the 1980s when Dr. Norman Cousins in his book, Anatomy of an Illness described how watching Marx Brother movies and reading humorous books and articles helped him recover from a life-threatening tissue disease. Cousins made it a point to enjoy a hearty belly laugh several times a day. He claimed that a few minutes of laughter gave him an hour or more of pain-free sleep. As a result, many pain centers around the country began to use humor therapy to reduce the level of pain medication needed by patients. There was even a movie made about real-life doctor Patch Adams, a physician who was totally committed to making his patients laugh as an essential part of his treatment.

How does laughter reduce pain?

Clinical staff consistently note that the primary benefit of humor therapy is that it serves as a diversionary tactic, that is, it takes a patient’s mind off the pain. A study published in the Journal of Holistic Nursing reported that patients who were told one-liners after surgery and before painful medication was administered perceived less pain when compared to patients who didn’t get a dose of humor as part of their therapy.

Another study, this one published in the Journal of Applied Behavioral Analysis, found that young girls with burns who were shown cartoons during very painful hydrotherapy said they felt less pain than similar patients who were not exposed to cartoons during the same procedure. A second theory of how laughter helps relieve pain is that it triggers the release of endorphins, the chemicals in the brain that can make us feel good.

Natural healing

Around the same time that the Cousins book appeared, the departing editor of the New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Franz Ingelfinger, noted that 85 percent of all human illnesses are curable by the body’s own healing system. Building a positive focus in your lifewhich includes a regular dose of laughter can play a key role in supporting the body’s ability to do just that. Laughing, in fact, has been shown to increase the body’s natural killer cells and T-cells, which are types of cells that attack foreign material in our bodies. Laughter also keeps away negative emotions such as anxiety and depression, which tends to weaken the immune system.

Research on stress-related hormones and humor has shown that laughter reduces at least four of the hormones associated with the stress response, including epinephrine, cortisol, dopac, and growth hormone. Some studies have indicated that laughter improves lung capacity and with improved lung capacity comes improved oxygen levels in the blood, thereby alleviating ischemic pain or pain due to lack of oxygen-rich blood.

Internal jogging

According to Dr. William Fry from Stanford University, one minute of laughter is equal to 10 minutes on the rowing machine. Laughter is a kind of "internal jogging" that exercises our heart and reduces blood pressure in the same way as does standard aerobic exercise. This kind of laughter exercise is well suited to sedentary people and those who are confined to a bed or wheelchair.

If you keep the Hah Hah Hah – going for long periods of time and increase the number of times you do it while at the same time shrugging your upper body you will keep the oxygen flowing to the cells that need it and you will be giving what you body need to begin to reduce your pain and speed healing.

And here’s a final fascinating fact: Researchers at St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center in Minnesota say that tears of laughter remove toxic substances that normally build up during periods of emotional stress…So, whether you prefer Light Hearted jokes, Redneck jokes or Funny Photos the Internet has provide us with an unlimited number of resources, not to mention the ton of emails that you get from your friends. Maybe just read one a week and see how you feel.

If you do read a joke or see a funny photo and it does put a smile on your face learn to keep that smile going longer and feel how good you feel when you keep your head up and a smile on your face. Life will always be full of challenges but we should always be driven to seek those thing that give us Joy and Peace, so if a joke can give you 30 seconds of joy, read a joke and keep smiling.

Back Pain Symptoms: To Call The Doctor Or Not?

In today’s stressful fast moving society where many of us lack a regular physical exercise regime, eat too much and generally don’t look after our bodies as we should, back pain in all its variations has become a major irritant to our way of life.

There are a number of different factors which contribute to back pain, ie. from over-exertion, the aging process or any host of possible medical conditions. These conditions can vary greatly – from mild problems that can be treated at home to more serious issues that require a doctor’s diagnosis and prescription along with specialized treatments. Owing to the varied range of causes for back pain symptoms, it is important for the sufferer to recognize the type of back pain that is being experienced so that you can decide if a doctor is needed or not, to treat your condition properly.

What Are The Common Back Pain Symptoms

The most common type of back pain symptom is stiffness and the pain itself; however, the type of pain can vary significantly. It may range from a persistent ache, or stiffness in the muscle area, especially if you have been lying or sitting in one position to long. Or It could be an acute pain that is localized to a specific area of the back. This type of pain is often the result of a muscle strain after lifting something heavy or it may be caused by overdoing your daily exercise routine. Or you may experience chronic, localized pain that settles in the middle or lower back. This discomfort can be exacerbated by sitting or standing for long periods of time.

Having an understanding of the symptoms of back pain suffering you will be able to decide if you need to visit the doctor or not and if you do to describe exactly what your symptoms are, assisting the doctor to make an informed diagnosis and then to recommend the type of treatment or medication best suited to your needs. This will insure you have the fastest and best effective relief possible. There are other back pain symptoms that may indicate a serious medical problem. If you recognize any of the following symptoms, it is recommended that you contact your doctor for further investigation.

When to Call your Doctor

Excluding the many back pain symptoms that can be cured at home, there are other more serious symptoms that will require a call to your doctor. For example:

* If you experience any type of numbness or tingling in your extremities, this could mean that there has been damage to your spinal cord.

* If your back pain symptoms include a fever, you could be suffering from an infection.

* Pain shooting down one leg from your spine often indicates the condition known as sciatica.

* A pain that intensifies when you bend over or cough might mean that you have a herniated disc.

* Finally, any back pain symptoms after the age of 50 should be looked at for the possibility of osteoarthritis.

If you recognize any of these symptoms the pain you are experiencing can be quite intense, therefore, a call to your doctor will help you to diagnose your condition accurately and prescribing the most effective treatment and the subsequent pain relief as soon as possible..

Stretching Exercises to Strengthen Back

Back Strengthening Exercises

You can stretch and strengthen your lower back in as little as 5-10 minutes a day.

When I was younger, I didn’t have to worry about exercises to strengthen my back, because I was very active, into sports, hiking, etc.  But… getting older, being less active, and working from home has caused me some real back pain problems.

My back got weaker because of less physical activity, sitting in a chair most of the day, and the wonderful process of getting older!  I haven’t kept my stomach strong because of this, which supports my spine.  I’ve had disc problems, pelvic disalignment, and a lot of lower back pain.  For those of you that have suffered from bad backs, you know how debilitating this can be.

So, I found some quick and easy back toning exercises to not only help strengthen my back, but increase resilience and lower back flexibility.

So, once you know you just need to strengthen your back, you can start a routine of quick exercises that will get and keep your back in good condition.  These excercises will help stretch and strengthen your back while making it more resilient, so you can be more active without worrying so much about twisting and turning, lifting, odd angles, etc.  There are proper ways to do these things, as well, but that’s in my back pain cause post!

exercies for your back

This routine is simple, and easy to do if you do what you can as you can.  If you have a hard time laying on your back without additional support when you do these exercises, put your hands under your back for support, and push your back against them while doing it.  This helps make it easier to raise your body, arms and legs up without problems or pain.  Remember to hold your stomach in as best you can while doing these back toning exercises, as your stomach muscles help strengthen your back.

back exercises

Stretches for Lower Back

#1 – Stretching/Loosening:
(Very important before doing other exercises):

  • Lay on the floor (or other firm, flat surface) on your back
  • Bring both legs to your chest gently with your hands, and exhale.
  • Hold this position for a count of 5-10, depending on your comfort level.

Do this once or twice, depending on how good it feels to you.  This is very helpful in ‘stretching’ those muscles out, limbering them up, and preparing your back for the back strengthening exercises or any physical activity.

back stretches

#2 – Stretching:

  • Laying on your back, gently pull one knee to your chest with your hands, and hold for 5-10 seconds, depending on your comfort level.  Breathe normally while you’re doing this.
  • Do the same with your other leg, and repeat this process with both legs.

lower back exercises

Exercises to Strengthen Lower Back

Back Muscle Exercise

#3 (also stretches the hamstrings):

  • Lay on your back, and lift one leg up in the air.  Do your best to keep it straight, but only do what you can, and increase it next time.
  • Clasp your hands behind your knee, and pull your leg gently to you.
  • Do this with your other leg, and repeat the process again with both legs.

As with all of these exercises, Don’t Strain Yourself. Do the other leg and then repeat.

Back Strength Exercises

#4 – Back Strength Exercise

  • Lay on the floor on your back.
  • Bend your knees and cross your legs.
  • Keeping your legs crossed, let them slowly fall to one side so you’re laying on your side.
  • Gently put your higher arm to the opposite direction of the way you’re laying. Again, do not force it.
  • Bring your legs back to the center, cross the other way, and let your legs slowly fall down to the other side.
  • Bring your other arm across, away from your body.  (Some people will hear a little ‘snap’ in their spine when doing this.  Generally, this exercise is excellent for aligning your back, so you shouldn’t have to worry about this.  However, that’s another reason to stress Stretching and limbering up beforehand.

back exercises

Low Back Exercise

#5 – Lower Back Strengthening Exercises

  • Lift one arm and stretch it above and to your side.
  • At the same time, lift your opposite leg up and as straight as possible, keeping both raised off of the floor.
  • Hold this position for a count of 5-10, depending on your initial comfort level
  • Do the same with the opposite arm and leg, holding for a count of 5-10, and repeat for both sides.

You might not be able to lift your arms and legs far off the floor in the beginning.  Don’t worry about that.  The most important thing is that you don’t strain yourself.  As you do this, you will get stronger and more agile.  Increase your count and sets as this gets more comfortable.

#6 (Sit-ups w/Knees Bent):  Strengthening your stomach helps a lot in supporting and strengthening your back and spine.

  • Lay on the floor with your knees bent
  • Do a couple sets of sit-ups in sets of 5 or 10, depending on the shape you’re in.   Be your own best judge in determining the number of sit-ups, and times to repeat this process.  Just make sure as you’re mastering one level, you increase them.  Increasing your sets, and increasing sit-ups by 5 is a good general guide.
  • Rest a few seconds, and repeat the process 5-10 times if you can; again, depending on your comfort level.

Next time increase the sit-ups and/or sets, and go from there.  BUT, again, don’t over-strain yourself!

It won’t take you long to do these exercises, and using both the stretches and back strengthening exercises will do wonders for your back strength, resiliency, and flexibility.  But, you’ll also ‘feel’ better!  You’ll notice if you do this consistently, as that’s the key, you will have more energy and stamina, as well.  But, most importantly, you’ll notice a huge difference in your back (and stomach) strength, etc.

Doing these quick and simple back strengthening excercises just 5-10 minutes a day (or longer if you wish – just don’t overdo it!) is all it will take to stretch and strengthen your lower back in a short amount of time at home.

For more on back stretch exercise or back strength exercise, please see the related videos.

*NOTE:  I always encourage you to see your doctor about any physical issues, because there may be more going on than meets the eye with your back and/or spine.  This is very important.  However, if you just have general back/spine weakness, etc., the back strengthening exercise will help greatly.

Natural Back Pain Relief – Acupuncture

Do you know, in the USA alone back pain is the second most common form of neurological disorders that a person is going to suffer. Although there are many prescribed medications a person can use in order to treat back pain, there are also a number of natural back pain relief treatments a person may want to consider using instead.

However when it comes to treating any kind of back problem the first thing a person should do is discuss the matter with their doctor or health care provider. There are many different reasons which can cause back pain. Anything from a muscle strain through to more serious conditions such as spinal stenosis or a herniated disc or it could have been caused by spondylosisthesis or osteoporosis.

In some cases it may be caused because a tumor is growing on the spine for example. But before you can actually treat the disorder whether using prescribed or natural treatments you first need to find out the cause in order that you can use the most effective back pain treatment possible.

Below, I am going to take a one particular form of natural back pain relief that a person may want to consider using instead of prescribed medication.

Acupuncture is considered to be beneficial in helping to reduce the long term symptoms that many back pain patients suffer. In fact in studies carried out at Sheffield University in the United Kingdom, they carried out a study of 239 people. Out of these, 159 people were treated by providing them a course of 8 acupuncture treatments whilst the other 80 were provided with normal back pain treatments.

After one year it was found that those being treated using acupuncture not only had reduced amounts of pain but they found themselves also worrying less about the pain as well. After carrying out the treatment for 2 years the patients being treated using acupuncture were reporting that they were in most cases, pain free from the second year and were now beginning to use less medication.

When it comes to using acupuncture as a natural back pain relief treatment, a person can generally expect to pay between $60 and $120 for the treatment but it is tax deductible as it is considered to be a medical expense.

Also, if you are considering using this method to treat your back pain then it may be wise to check your medical insurance plan as the provider may well cover the costs of such treatment within theirs. Plus, you need to be aware that initially you will need to see the acupuncturist between 1 and 3 times a week for several weeks in the beginning before the effects can be felt.

Chronic Back Pain Relief Exercises

Exercise is very good for you, as as I’m sure you appreciate, but it’s especially beneficial as a upper back pain treatment, if you conform with a couple of simple guidelines, and practice the right exercises.

Here’s a bunch of easygoing and effective examples that can help relieve back pain and provide some appreciated chronic back pain relief.

Shift and lift: The "shift and lift" is an exercise that really can boost the muscles in your lower back and buttocks (in particular) while sitting down. Even though this is something that you can practice while you are at work, because of the nature of the ‘lifting’ factor of the exercise, I would not really recommend that you do this while talking to others in your office, for example. They may wonder what on earth you’re up to! Nonetheless, this is a great exercise for reducing any stiffness or soreness that may result from sitting in the same position for an extended period of time, and it strengthens those muscles too! While you are in your chair, relax and then clench the muscle in one buttock and hold for a couple of seconds, lifting slightly as you do so. Relax and then do it again. Do this 15-20 repetitions with each buttock.

Hip sway: This is great exercise to do if you are standing for any length of time, as it helps to ease the tautness in your legs and lower back and invigorates the blood flow around all of your lower body. It also reduces or even eliminates mid back pain that affects a lot of people if they are required to stand for a long time. Stand up straight, let you right knee relax totally, and at the same time pushing your left hip out to the side. Pull the hip back in again, and repeat the same action 15-20 times. Afterwards, allow your left knee to bend and relax, and force your right hip out in the same way.

Lifting: Go find a bag – a supermarket carrier bag, or something else with extended handles for lifting will be fine. Hold something fairly heavy in the bag – it doesn’t really matter what you put in there, providing it weighs at least a few kilos (drinks bottles are ideal for this, because you know that a liter bottle of water weighs almost exactly a kilo). Keeping your arm straight down by your side, bend your legs until you can reach the bag on the floor and then straighten your legs and lift the bag. Once you’re back upright again, hold the standing position for a few seconds, and then return the bag to the floor by bending at the knees once again. Repeat this exercise 15 times for one side of your body, and then repeat on the other side. When you do this exercise the right way (by bending at your knees, not you back) – this exercise is good for lower back and hip pain, and is excellent for strengthening the lower back, glutes and hips, and an added bonus is that it will help tone your arms and legs.

Shrugging: This is a very simple exercise that not only helps keep your lower back in great shape, it is also an effective way of discharging the stress that can build up in your shoulders and neck. It’s also very good for toning your arms and shoulder muscles. Because you can do the exercise sitting or standing you can perform it pretty much anywhere. For the starting position, just shrug your shoulders all the way up to your ears (or at least as far as you can), then extend your arms sideways from your body until they are parallel to the ground and turn your palms so they face outward. To finish, slant your head till it touches your shoulder then hold for a few seconds. Return to the start position and do it all over again, but this time, tilt your head to the other side.

Tens of thousands of people are laid low with back pain every year. For some, the lucky ones, it resolves within a few weeks with a judicious combination of exercises supplemented by painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs. But what of the rest? There are a myriad of different specialists involved in the treatment of back pain, each with their own opinion as to the likely explanation and the best way of putting it right. Having said that, the use of acupuncture as a method for offering at least some chronic back pain relief seems to have some merits. Author: Michelle Spencer If you’re suffering with any form of recurrent back pain, it’s vital that you understand exactly what options you have for finding a suitable back pain treatment that will work for you. The main reason you need to weigh your options is there are more muscles, joints, bones, nerves and ligaments running up and down the vertebrae in close proximity to each other than in any other part of the body. This can make it difficult for even the best-trained doctors with the most sophisticated diagnostic and back pain relief techniques to determine precisely what is amiss. Natural Sciatica Treatment

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

When it comes to trying to find the best natural sciatica relief treatment, it is  important that pepople understand just what it is. Too often people will get sciatica muddled up with other medical conditions.

The problem is that sciatica is a set of symptoms rather than it actually being a diagnosis in itself. Therefore, it can be treated using either traditional prescribed medications or natural ones, a doctor will need to carry out various tests in order to give the correct diagnosis. Normally when sciataca has been diagnosed by a doctor they will either provide their patient with anti-inflammatory drugs to treat it. However if the condition has become so severe then the only way in which it may well be treated is through the use of surgery.

But occasionally a doctor will try other forms of treatment such as manipulation of the spine, massage or physical therapy and will only resort to using surgery if all other recommended courses of treatment fail.

However there are more natural ways in which a person can treat this condition without them having to resort to using medications which can have other side effects. Although a lot of doctors will recommend that their patients take as much bed rest as possible, in a lot of cases this can actually make the condition worse rather than helping to alleviate the symptoms. Yes, it is important that a person does rest for a couple of days after the symptoms have appeared but after this they should take up some form of light exercise.

Preferably they should be looking to do exercises which will help to strengthen and stretch the muscles in their back. The problem with sciataca is that once the muscles in the back become weak they will be unable to support the back correctly and this in turn, will increase the amount of pain that the person is feeling.

But as well as carrying out these exercises, a person will need to look at the way they sit and stand. If their posture is wrong when they are sitting and standing, unfortunately doing the exercises will provide the person with only a small amount of relief from the condition. It is important that when using these exercises a person should be carrying them out twice a day and should only be doing them under the supervision of an expert such as a fitness instructor.

As well as using exercises in order to provide you with natural sciatica relief from the pain, a person may want to try using certain essential oils as well. These include certain properties within them which are ideal for treating the various symptoms and helping to relieve the pain a person will feel when suffering from sciatica.

Prevent Back Pain

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Back pain can either be acute or chronic. The word "acute" is Latin in origin which means "needles". Thus, acute back pain is usually experienced as a sudden, painfully severe, sharp sensation. "Chronic" on the other hand is a Greek word for "time". Chronic is generally persistent over an extended length of time, a dull and nagging discomfort, from months to years with a longer healing process. The back, being the workhorse of the body is more susceptible to pain and injury whether it be short- term or tragically long-term if treatment and preventive measures are not resorted to in the initial stages.

Eight out of ten people have back-injuries at some point throughout their lives. It is not at all simple to relieve and manage chronic back pain as it is a subjective experience. Doctors cannot objectively measure it therefore a thorough diagnosis can be challenging to obtain. It can be varied sensations that can be stabbing, dull, throbbing, pulsating to shock-like, to mention a few. In fact, it can originate not merely from the muscles or bones, but from the nerves, blood vessels and organs as well. Acute and chronic back pain can take on different pathways of the nervous system in the body. Once your muscles or ligaments are injured, receptors gather the impulses and transmit them to the spinal cord.

The pain then extends up to the brain and the whole process occurs at different rates. In the acute kind, transmission of impulses to the spinal cord and up to the brain is usually faster whereas in chronic back pain, the whole process takes on a slower speed. Furthermore, chronic back pain influences the limbic system of the brain that is linked with emotional states, as suggested by experts. It’s not surprising why it is escorted by negative and upsetting emotions. As it may sometimes be too late, the best treatment is prevention – it is a good insurance policy, so to speak. If soft muscles, such as the muscles, the ligaments and tendons are injured, early treatment would be necessary to prevent them from aggravating weakness, reduced elasticity and exceeding sensitivity.

For acute or chronic back pain, it may be sensible to apply heat to the painful areas. This may reduce the discomfort. Doing specific exercises may also be helpful. A hands-on technique to alleviate acute or chronic back pain may also be one of the best methods to employ. Some of the techniques involved in it are done to manipulate or mobilize the joints and the soft tissues. This can be done properly by a chiropractic or osteopathic doctor. Another one of the best preventive and relief measures is massage or physical therapy.

Such would strengthen debilitated or damaged muscles and especially the basic core stabilizers. It may also be wise to enroll in a heath club for a formal rehabilitation program. As with any medical condition, it is always essential to consult your doctor for suitable and effective preventive and relief measures.

Pregnancy & Low Back Pain

Have a Pain-Free Back During & After Pregnancy

Four million women will successfully give birth this year – and that’s just in the United States. The bad news is that two out of every three women will suffer from lower back pain and herniated discs by the 36th week of pregnancy.

Lower Back Pain Interferes With Your Quality of Life

Not only will lower back pain become a horrible interruption in your daily activities, but it will also interfere with your quality of life. And, it can ruin your enjoyment of one of the most memorable times of your life. Here’s how.

Pregnancy at first can be very exciting for most new moms. You’re deciding on baby names. Painting the nursery. Buying baby clothes, toys and furniture. And, most of all you’re enjoying family celebrations. The joy of pregnancy is one of life’s greatest pleasures. However, for many women the later pregnancy months can be quite challenging and painful. And, it’s not just because of morning sickness!

Your lower back hurts. It feels like someone keeps stabbing you with a knife. You feel it over and around your spine, and the pain even radiates to your legs. Sitting or standing for long periods of time makes your back hurt more. And this pain intensifies as your day goes on.

The Hidden Cause of Your Lower Back Pain Not Seen by the Untrained Eye

The obvious cause of lower back pain in pregnant women just like you is the biomechanical stress being placed on them by the added weight of their baby. Your uterus will expand and shift your center of gravity. It will stretch and weaken your abdominal muscles. It changes your posture and puts a strain on your lower back.

As the baby gains weight, your abdomen will be pulled forward. To compensate for this forward pull, you’ll probably lean backward like most women do. This alone puts a tremendous amount of pressure on your lower back and pelvis.

The hidden cause of your lower back pain is actually muscle imbalances. The primary cause of your herniated disc or bulge is uneven compression and torsion that’s placed on your lower back. This uneven pressure is caused by imbalances in muscles that pull the spine out of its normal position. Your body is now forced to function in what I call a physical dysfunction.

If the dysfunctions are not addressed, they will continue to place uneven pressure and strain on the discs in your back. Sooner or later you will likely have another problem with that disc, or others.

Reduce Low Back Pain and Herniated Discs by Identifying the Underlying Causes of Your Problem.

Unfortunately, most doctors, chiropractors and physical therapists don’t spend time or focus on identifying the hidden causes or physical dysfunctions that are responsible for your lower back pain.

So most pregnant women grin and accept back pain as a normal part of their pregnancy. However, You can take steps to stop the soreness. It’s a good idea to learn these techniques now, because you’ll probably need them again later when your back is bearing the strain of constantly lifting your 7- to 10-pound baby or your 20-pound toddler.

3 Steps to Reducing Back Pain Before & After Your Pregnancy

1. Understanding muscle imbalances: The solution to a pain-free back during and after pregnancy is based on a better understanding of muscle imbalances and how your body works. You must understand what muscle imbalances are, how they are created and how they cause low back pain.

2. Know your habits, patterns, postures and positions: You must identify your muscle imbalances and understand how they are causing you pain. Assess how you sit, stand, walk lift, bend or otherwise put your body through painl every day.

3. Get the RIGHT Help: Find a qualified Manual Physical Therapist who is trained to assess postural dysfunction. Demand that they create both a short term and a long-term plan of recovery for you filled with the right combination of corrective exercises, stretches and treatments.

Understanding back pain and taking action are two totally different animals. But, if you want to reduce back pain and start enjoying one of the most memorable times of your life again, then you must educate your self and take action everyday. It is never to late to start a program of recovery on your own or with help from an expert.

Dr. Robert Duvall has helped thousands of mothers suffering from back pain using this approach in his clinic and around the country. Pregnancy Backache

Standing should be erect and straight with the shoulders pulled back. Slouching can precipitate or worsen the backache symptom. Later in the pregnancy process, back pain may still manifest. Especially as the uterus becomes more enlarged..

Avoid Back Pain during Pregnancy

Every second an expecting mom experiences back pain. These tips will help you make your pregnancy free from back pains. Pregnancy should not be a kind of torture! Store your high heels in the deepest corner of your closet. Apart for the fact that they are dangerous, since you can trip at any moment when wearing them, they also worsen the sagging in the back. If you simply can not survive without high heels then at least wear low-heel shoes.

Back Pain In Children

Children and Back Pain

More and more children are suffering from back pain. What’s causing this, and is it such a grand idea to keep our children on so much medication to better handle their pain?

Back Pain in Children

Low Back Pain Is Not Just For Adults

In years past, low back pain was thought to be a malady afflicting only the elderly. Well, it’s not just your granddad’s disorder any longer. Once considered a rare pediatric condition, low back pain in children has become a growing concern among many in the medical community.

Children’s skeletal structures are in a continual growth state until late adolescence. Combined with the stress of sports activities including contact sports, the incidence of low back pain in children is skyrocketing. In a recent study, it was determined that low back pain was responsible for approximately 23% of most school absenteeism, and when sports injuries were thrown into the mix, that number jumped to 29%. Even more surprising, researchers discovered that in 75% of reported cases, childhood low back pain triggered depression and other psychological problems. This constitutes a serious concern that demands the attention of parents and health care providers alike.

What Causes Low Back Pain In Children?

It seems that many of the same health issues that initiate low back pain in adults, such as poor posture, misalignment of vertebrae, trauma, emotional stress and sports injuries, have the same affect on children. Add to these issues the fact that most school-age children carry backpacks that weigh 10-20% of their body weight, and you have a recipe for life-long health concerns and back pain.

Emotional stress is also an important factor to consider. Adolescents are subject to wildly varying emotions sometimes compared to a rollercoaster ride. It can be terrifying and exhilarating at the same time; filled with soaring, sky-high excitement only to suddenly plummet into a downward spiral. Interestingly, these rollercoaster emotions have been associated with lower back pain. Research in England involving children between the ages of 11 and 14 revealed that children with higher levels of psychological and social difficulties are much more likely to experience low back pain than their peers.

The Good News Is That Chiropractic Can Help

When spinal vertebrae become misaligned, whether in an adult or in a child, the diagnosis is called vertebral subluxation. This may sound like a frightening medical condition, but it is one that a professional chiropractic doctor can address with great success. However, when left untreated, vertebral subluxation can lead to frequent earaches, headaches, infant colic, neck pain and carpel tunnel syndrome.

Chiropractic care also addresses the nervous system which, among a myriad of other miraculous functions, governs the way in which our bodies react physically to stress. Chiropractic adjustments actually help your body release pent-up stress, relieving tight muscles, tendons and ligaments, and helping to prevent low back pain.

Chiropractic treatment is a wonderful, highly effective way to enjoy natural relief of back pain. Your child’s chiropractor will painlessly adjust the vertebral column in order to correct any vertebral misalignment, without potentially harmful drugs or invasive surgery. There is no recovery time; instead, your child will most likely experience an immediate relief from pain and restoration of movement. Additionally, your chiropractor can recommend exercises to relieve low back pain.

What Are The Three D’s, And Is Your Child At Risk?

DDD, or degenerative disc disease, is actually a form of arthritis and has been proven to be a common cause of lower back and leg pain in children. Surprisingly, DDD has even been diagnosed in infants. And yet, degenerative disc disease is not typically identified by traditional medical practitioners. Rather, highly-skilled and well-trained chiropractic doctors are leading the way into this new medical frontier.

Degenerative disc disease sounds like a progressive, very frightening disease that could certainly alarm any parent, so here is a brief explanation of DDD. Changes in the water and protein content of the body’s cartilage results in weaker, more fragile and thin cartilage. This more typically occurs as we get older. Now, because both the discs and the joints that stack the vertebrae are partly composed of cartilage, these areas are, unfortunately, subject to degenerative changes. The deterioration of the disc between the vertebrae is referred to as degenerative disc disease, and makes the disc tissue more susceptible to herniation.

Natural Remedies For Degenerative Disc Disease Are Available

The important thing to remember is that chiropractic care offers you and your child gentle, effective treatment of degenerative disc disease. Early detection and treatment is key to optimum recovery, however. Research at St. Louis University led by Francis W. Smith, MD revealed that degenerative changes in the spines of pediatric study participants occurred much earlier than previously suspected, creating a predisposition to muscle and muscle and ligament sprains and strains, as well as arthritis of the spinal joints.

DDD is not always accompanied by lower back or leg pain, so the wisest course of action is to seek preventative chiropractic care for you and your children. Further, Dr. Smith advises that degenerative disc disease preventative care should begin prior to puberty.

Be sure to ask your chiropractic doctor about symptoms of degenerative disc disease and what treatments are available.

Be Proactive – Protect Your Child’s Health

A wealth of scientific research confirms that chiropractic care provides safe, effective, and drug-free relief from back and neck pain … regardless of the cause. So if your child complains of low back pain, if you notice a difference in the way he walks, stands or sits, if your child appears overly clumsy or if you suspect a sport-related trauma, do not ignore these symptoms. Protect your child’s physical and emotional health by contacting a chiropractic care professional today.

Stress and Back Pain

Back Pain and Stress

One of the main causes of back pain is emotional stress and  back pain may be a signal that you are not coping well with stress. It’s common knowledge that people under stress are tense and that tension can settle in your back. Even if you are experiencing constant stress, your muscles may be tightening up so often that you become used to it. But those taut, tight muscles can send a strong pain signal to your brain. The discomfort may make you wary of normal activities and, as you limit your movement and activity, your muscles become weaker and gradually de-conditioned, and more painful. This vicious cycle continues and may end up as chronic back pain.

There are several things that you can do to ease stress induced back pain and break this cycle.

Reducing Stress

Once you recognize the stress in your life and the effects it has, there may be some ways to deal with it.

  • Try to identify people and situations that bother you. How can you deal with them? Some you might be able to avoid altogether.
  • Say you hate driving home in rush hour traffic and become tied in knots. Can you adjust your work hours and leave a bit earlier or later? Could you go to the gym or library for an hour after work?
  • If you hate standing in line at the grocery, consider shopping during off hours when the store is less crowded.
  • Financial pressures, long work weeks, medical problems add to stress and can not always be changed. You have to recognize the stress these problems and situations create and attempt to develop ways to deal with it.
  • Try to breakup your problems into small units that are not so overwhelming. Deal with one at a time, taking the easiest or most pressing first.
  • Learn your limitations and don’t take on more than you can handle. Manage your time and learn to say ‘No’ to burdensome commitments.

Breathing Exercises

One breathing technique that is helpful is 2:1 breathing. Inhale to the count of three and then exhale while you count to six. Repeat this several times

Relaxation Techniques

These techniques invoke the relaxation response which is the opposite of the stress response. Using deep breathing techniques, muscles relax and blood pressure, heart rate and respiration decrease. Progressive muscle relaxation and self-hypnosis are also helpful.

Meditation and Visualization

These methods have devoted followers who have calmed their busy minds by combining imagery with breathing exercises.

  • One meditation technique is known as ‘taking the one chair’. Imagine yourself in a room in which there is a single chair. Sit down on the chair and let your thoughts and emotions pass in front of you. Remember that you are sitting in the only chair in the room and your thoughts have no place to rest. Watch them pass right on out of the room.

Body Scan

  • Complete a body scan. Begin by lying or sitting down and do several cycles of 2:1 breathing. After you are fully relaxed, make a full mental sweep of your body as though you were undergoing a complete x-ray. Move slowly but steadily and note all areas of tightness or tension. After you’ve finished the scan, return to the tight, tense areas and consciously ‘ breathe’ into those spots for several breathing cycles. Imagine your muscles slowly relaxing.
  • A body scan takes some time but if done on a regular basis, it can help you become aware of early warning signs of a looming back pain attack. You become aware of your individual signal spots, places that hurt when your back first starts acting up but before a full pain attack is under way. This helps you take early action to get the discomfort under control.

Consider talk therapy with a stress counselor, a support group or a psychologist. Talk to your health care provider about your stress. Most people think that the mind and body are separate and function independently. Instead, they usually work together in shaping experiences. Recognizing the ‘mind – body’ relationship is the first step in dealing with the connection and breaking the vicious stress – pain connection.

Essential Oils and Chronic Back Pain

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

Millions of Americans live with chronic back pain. We have so many advances in modern medicine, yet so many suffer with unrelieved pain.

As a registered nurse for 20 years, I have cared for many that experience chronic pain. It was always something that bothered me. It is difficult to watch people suffer in pain. I had to find a solution. In order to do that I had to dig deeper into the cause. Here is what I discovered over 20 years of personal research.

-You can relieve chronic pain. The body is incredibly intelligent, if you work with it, you can heal it.

-Pain is a valuable message from your body, it has a language that you can learn.

-Working with natural remedies helps you tune into the language and heal the pain with substances that the body likes and appreciates. Covering up the pain with medications causes the body to continue to send more pain messages.

Our bodies have been intelligently created to respond positively to plants and nature. We have been eating plants to nourish and sustain us in the form of grains, vegetables, and herbs for hundreds of years. We have also used plants in medicine for thousands of years. Many think that essential oils are a new age healing technique but, they have been used for healing for thousands of years as well, with references observed even in the bible.

Here are three ways to use essential oils to heal chronic back pain.

1) Applying essential oils to the painful area, increases blood flow and oxygen to the area. Lavender oil can be used to penetrate deeply into the area to produce relaxation and reduce inflammation. It can relax irritation to muscles and nerve endings. Scientific studies show it repairs and heals the tissues.

2) Many times our pain is created as a response to emotions, as in the case of a tension or stress headache. There are specific emotions that can create the same pain in the spine and back. Release essential oil blend can be used to release these emotions in the area of the back where they are being stored.

3) Have you ever had an inner knowing or intuition yet didn’t listen or trust it? Then, in hindsight, you saw the situation so clearly? Frequently our bodies create a pain to signal a warning. Often when we resist our inner knowing, spirit and our subconscious will intensify the pain to get us to surrender. Surrender essential oil blend can be used to relieve pain in the back and spine allowing you to open and surrender to the message your body is sending. Once you do, they pain literally melts away.

When you begin to work with the natural rhythms, messages of your body , pain can be relieved. Using a natural and holistic remedy and approach allows you to work with your body to relieve the pain once and for all.

 Essential Oil posts for you.

Essential Oils for Pain Relief

Aromatherapy or the use of essential oils for pain relief is an effective therapy to deal with any sort of health problem.

Aromatherapy Guide

The term Aromatherapy is a bit misleading, as the aroma of an essential oil is only one facet of the oil’s interaction with the human body. Aromatherapy is really the entire branch of botanical medicine using volatile aromatic plant. Exercises for Lower Back Pain

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

Lower back pain problems is a common story due to the unhealthy lifestyles followed today. Use these exercises for lower back pain to get relief without extra medications.Lower Back Pain Exercises

We all know the importance of exercise and the need to include it in our daily routines. Exercising everyday helps to have a healthy body and mind and prevent many health-related problems. However, due to today’s fast-paced life, exercise routines are often skipped leading to many problems. Professionals who spend hours before the computer pay little heed to the importance of exercise. Complaints about back pain and aches are on the rise with painkillers being the only option. Computer professionals particularly complain about many issues related to the lower back. Lower back pain happens when a person spends too many hours in one position or even due to incorrect posture. However, lower back pain can be cured and even prevented with some basic back excercises. Use these exercises for lower back pain relief to cure the problem in a natural way.

Exercises for Lower Back Pain Exercise 1 Stand straight with your arms at the side. Then, exhale and move your arms towards the upper side. Breathe in and then exhale and bend forward. Let your hands touch the floor. Knees can be bent slightly. Now, inhale as you come up and stand straight with a flat back. Then exhale and do a forward bend. Once again inhale and come back into the starting position and sweep the arms upwards. Let the palms touch. Do these 8 times in the initial period. Increase the count later on.

Exercise 2 Bend on the floor placing your weight on the hands and knees. Hands should be underneath the shoulders. Knees should be bent beneath the hips. Raise head towards the upper side and meanwhile, raise the hips as well. Let the stomach drop towards the floor. You need to hold this position for only 5 seconds. Do this exercise 8 times and increase the count only when you can manage it comfortably.

Exercise 3 Stand straight with the feet wide apart from each other. Bend the knees. Bring your arms towards the front side of the chest area. Slowly twist your torso to the right side. While doing so, squeeze the abs. Now, twist to the left and repeat. The turns should be slow. Do not overstretch the body. Do 8 repetitions for each side. Increase count gradually.

Exercise 4 Lie flat on the back. Roll a small towel and place it under the curve of your spine. Keep the left leg straight down. Bend the right hip and point foot towards the ceiling. Use your hands to hold the right thigh. Elbows should be straight. Try to straighten the knee. While doing so, you will feel a stretch on the backside of the thigh area. You need to hold this position for at least 30 seconds. Repeat procedure for the other leg. Do this exercise only twice for each side. Increase count gradually.

Exercise 5 Lie flat on the floor. Bring the knees towards the upper side. Bend them at 90 degrees and keep the arms outstretched, touching the floor. Now, contract the abs. Turn towards the right side bringing your knees in the same position, but on the floor. Then, bring the knees back to the center position and lower them towards the left side. Do this exercise 8 times for each side. Increase count gradually with sessions. Use these exercises to strengthen the muscles and cure such chronic pain problems. With regular exercise, you can get relief from back pain without the need of any medications!

Back Pain’s Newly Discovered Cause

Incorrect use of voluntary muscles can cause pain throughout the body. This article discusses an example in the lower back based on one engineering principle. There are others which will be discussed in other articles.

This article is about a cause of back pain which most people, including doctors, don’t understand.

This back pain cause is not disease such as cancer or arthritis. It is not injury such as falling off a ladder. Also, it is not a mentally caused pain…it is a very real pain.

This back pain is caused by incorrect use of voluntary muscles. Voluntary muscles are muscles you can control. Do this. Lift your arm. There, you used voluntary muscles.

You can cause pain by using, or not using, your voluntary muscles incorrectly. By using one hand to bend the fingers of your other hand backward you can cause pain. This is an example of incorrectly using voluntary muscles and causing pain.

This discovery, called Denlinger’s Discovery(TM), is about another cause of pain throughout the human body and how to fix it. Denlinger’s Discovery came about by applying engineering basics to the human body. Using these engineering basics one can also increase the load carrying capability of the body. In this article we’ll only look at one function, of several functions, of the back.

In 1759 a Switzerland born scientist named Leonardo Euler (1707-1783) developed the first, most basic formulas about the relationship of the height to the thickness of a column. A summary of this formula is that the thinner a column or post, as compared to its height, the more likely it will fail (ie, break) by bending rather than by crushing. Also, if the column has supports in the middle to keep it from bending, it will be able to carry a much heavier load.

Here’s an experiment you can do. Get a long, skinny twig from a tree or bush. Stand it up on a table vertically and push down on the top with a finger. Feel how easily it bends. If you push too hard it will break. Next, place your other hand on the side to keep it from bending so much and press down on the top again. Feel how much stronger the twig is now.

You can see an example of this principle applied in daily life by looking at a very tall television transmission tower. Typically these towers have wires, called guy wires, going from the middle (often from quarter, half and three quarter points or more) down to the ground. These guy wires keep the tower from bending in the middle, so it can carry a load to a much greater height.

The spine in the lower back of the human body has voluntary muscles which can act like guy wires to keep the spine from bending from side to side. Looking in the Doctor’s Bible, "Gray’s Anatomy", you can see these muscles in one of the drawings looking at the rear of the body. These muscles are called "quadratus lumborum" (they are shown in a posterior view of the back and described in the section on Deep Muscles of the Abdomen). Correctly using these voluntary guy-wire-type muscles per Euler’s formulas could fix a problem called scoliosis. Currently doctors use braces and even surgery to correct scoliosis. As long as the muscles and nerves are in place and not damaged and the person is willing and able to learn how to use them and s/he then trains his or her guy-wire-type muscles the scoliosis problem could be fixed by correct use of voluntary muscles.

The same basic principle of preventing too much bending, using other muscles, can be applied in another direction to strengthen the spine by preventing too much curve forward and backward. There are other engineering basics which can be applied to the back and other parts of the human body which will be covered in other articles.

Back Pain - Chronic Low Back

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments: I just read an article on www.medicalnewstoday.com entitled: ‘Alarming Increase’ In Prevalence of Chronic Low-Back Pain: UNC Study The article goes on to talk about how, according to research,  maybe increased obesity rates (what I think is a major cause), depression and awareness of the condition. and the decline in manufacturing and services jobs and increase in construction jobs.

Cause of Lower Back Pain

When determining the underlying cause of low back pain, both the type of low back pain (a description of how the pain feels) and the area of pain distribution (where the pain is felt) help guide the physician in making a preliminary decision.

Avoid Straining Your Back

One of the most familiar causes of back pain is muscle pull or muscle strain. This is a position in which you put forth more pressure on your back muscles than you need to.

Stress Cause Back Pain

Stress cause back pain in both the lower and upper part of the spine . Amazingly the same with the sniffles that can be to the common cold, stress can be to back pain.

Symptoms Back Pain Treatment

Muscle ache: Back pain is often followed by an ache in the muscles of your back. From time to time, the pain maybe a sharp and shooting that can leave your vision clouded with different colors of pain.  Medical science is still some way from discovering a back pain relief remedy that will work for everyone. Prescription pain relief pills may in fact dull the pain to a manageable degree, they do not treat the root cause of the structural problem.

Is Your Back Hurting You? Or Are You Hurting Your Back?

 by: Roy Palmer

Have you ever been asked at a treatment or examination if you know the location of you hips joints? Sounds a bit odd doesn’t it! But in many cases of lower back pain it can be a tremendous help and once you can learn to move from the most appropriate places. The amount of stress on the lower back can be reduced dramatically once you move as nature intended.

Poor posture is recognised as a factor in lower back pain, but why do so many adults suffer from it – some studies estimate 80%! Modern life presents us with many pressures – work, finances and spending long hours sitting at desks or in cars. This sort of lifestyle for most adults leads to an increase in muscle tension resulting in the familiar neck, shoulder and back pain and other general aches and pains. Ultimately it will change your body dynamics and alter the way you move.

Habits you are probably unaware of will influence the way you move and your concept of how you body works. Due to the nature of habit it can be difficult changing them but it is not impossible. A course in re-education can help to correct your body concept and get you moving as nature intended again. Some exercises may help but they will not change your habits associated with standing, sitting and moving – these may well be the cause for your lower back pain. Yoga and tai chi can be very effective re-education methods and there are many recorded cases of how they help with back conditions.

In my view, both from a past back pain sufferer and now as a professional, one of the best methods to change your habits is The Alexander Technique. It is one of the few disciplines that recognises the role and nature of habit in lower back pain and many other general disorders. Until your concepts and habits relating to your movement changes, your condition will stay untouched.

Back pain, the driver and the mechanic

A man takes his car to a garage with a faulty gearbox. The mechanic identifies the fault and replaces a number of components. A few months later the man returns with the same problem, so again the mechanic replaces the suspect parts.

Not long afterwards the same car is towed into the garage after a breakdown. The mechanic assumes there must be a design fault with this model but cannot recall seeing many similar faults. If the design was suspect then everyone would have the same problem, therefore it must be something the driver is doing wrong. He replaces the gearbox and asks the driver if he could accompany him on a drive. The mechanic notices how poorly the man drives the car particularly when changing gear. He suggests to the driver that a few lessons might help to improve his habits. The driver follows this advice and eventually the problems with the gearbox cease.

He did not learn to drive like this. His bad habits developed gradually due to lack of attention to his driving whilst pre-occupied with other matters. He had never been a passenger to observe how other people drive. The mechanic could not identify the root of the problem by just looking at the car – he had to observe the driver and car in action to diagnose the cause.

We know that habits can be harmful to health. The end result of more obvious habits such as smoking and over-eating are easy to see. But what about the habits we do not know we have? Applying excessive effort to everything we do can be just as damaging. Your lower back pain may be due to your driving habits.
